Miami’s trustees approve three new degree programs
New master's degree, two new bachelor's degrees will be available to students
During its regular meeting on Friday, May 17, the Miami University Board of Trustees approved three new degree programs. Miami University President Gregory Crawford presented and signed the Miami 2040 Climate Action Plan in fulfillment of the Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitments. The plan outlines the strategies and goals to reach carbon neutrality on the Oxford campus by 2040. The trustees also heard updates on the ongoing MiamiTHRIVE strategic planning process and the mission statement revision.
Students will soon be able to pursue a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical and Smart Manufacturing, a bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics, and a Bachelor of Philosophy in Individualized Studies. The MEng degree program aims to attract recent bachelor of science graduates and part-time and nontraditional students who want to pursue an engineering degree at their own pace.
New board members Lisa Peterson, director of communications for Gov. Mike DeWine, and Peyton B. Morrow, a new student trustee, were welcomed to their first meeting of their respective terms. The board re-appointed Dinesh Paliwal as a national trustee for a second three-year term.
The trustees also:
- Authorized an increase in the resident undergraduate tuition for the fall 2024 cohort on the Oxford Campus by 2% and 3% for the regional campuses.
- Approved recommendation to dissolve the Department of Comparative Religion due to its low-enrolled majors and institutional reprioritizations.
- Approved three administrator emeritus/a status for retiring employees.
- Approved renaming the Havighurst Center to the Havighurst Center for East European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies.
- Approved the naming of the Advanced Manufacturing Workforce and Innovation Hub for the recently acquired technology park on the Hamilton campus.
- Approved the naming of the Kole Student Observation Suite and the Kole Therapy Equipment Room located in the Clinical Health Sciences and Wellness building.
The next meeting of the Miami University Board of Trustees is scheduled for June 26-28.
