Miami alumnus Juan Gilbert '91 appointed to National Science Board by President Joe Biden
President Joe Biden has appointed Miami University alumnus Juan Gilbert ’91 to the National Science Board.
Gilbert is the Andrew Banks Family Preeminence Endowed Professor and chair for the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Department at the University of Florida, where he leads the Computing for Social Good Lab.
The computer scientist, educator, and researcher earned a degree in Applied Science from Miami University, where he majored in Systems Analysis in the College of Engineering and Computing.
Gilbert called it humbling to serve with so many esteemed researchers and leaders.
“Serving on the National Science Board is a tremendous honor and responsibility. The ability to set the scientific agenda for the nation is a major responsibility,” he said. “Also, serving as an expert to the president and Congress is an acknowledgment of the research accomplishments from our lab over the years.”
The Hamilton native said he hopes to bring “computing for social good perspectives” to the board.
“Our work on using technology to solve real world problems is something I hope to contribute,” he said.
Last year, Biden awarded Gilbert the National Medal of Technology and Innovation for pioneering a universal voting system that makes voting more reliable and accessible for everyone and for increasing diversity in the computer science workforce.
The medal — the nation’s highest honor for technological achievement — was awarded at the White House on Oct. 24, 2023, to Gilbert and nine other Americans who have made exemplary achievements in science, technology, and innovation to strengthen our nation’s well-being.
Gilbert is one of eight new members appointed to the National Science Board.
