Rinella Learning Center earns recertification as Learning Center of Excellence

Every day, Christina Carrubba-Whetstine sees the hard work that goes into being a student at Miami University.

As director of Miami’s Rinella Learning Center, Carrubba-Whetstine also sees the extra effort the university puts in each day to help students achieve their academic goals.

Carrubba-Whetstine isn’t alone in noticing the results. The Rinella Learning Center recently earned recertification as a Learning Center of Excellence from the International College Learning Center Association (ICLCA). Miami is one of seven institutions in the United States to earn that designation and one of eight globally.

“The learning center is one of those places on campus where Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Enrollment Management and Student Success come together to support our students,” Carrubba-Whetstine said. “We work with our partners to make sure students aren’t falling through the cracks. We’re all on the same page working toward the same thing.”

The Rinella Center was first certified as a Learning Center of Excellence in 2019. At that time, it was one of four centers in the country to receive such certification.

The process is extensive, with the ICLCA looking at dedicated physical space, types of programs provided, resources, staffing, and more.

Located on the third floor of Shriver Center, the Rinella Center serves about 8,000 Miami students.

“That number speaks volumes to how readily available we are to students,” Carrubba-Whetstine said.

Miami scored higher on its recertification effort than in 2019, Carrubba-Whetstine said, in part because of the emphasis the university has placed on meeting the needs of students, wherever they may be. That includes offering both in-person and remote services, as well as the development of online self-service tools, such as short academic videos on readily requested topics.

“Each year we are trying to add to our collection of videos to help students,” Carrubba-Whetstine said. “That way we’ve been able to provide students with assistance when they need it as opposed to when we are open.”

Miami’s Learning Center of Excellence recertification is in place until 2028. Other schools receiving the certification include Auburn University, Louisiana State University, Rutgers University, University of Maryland, University of Louisville, and the University of New England in the U.S., along with Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia.

“Every day I am grateful to come into our center and do the kinds of things we do because we have the support of our administration and the support of some very generous donors,” Carrubba-Whetstine said. “We do invest in students and make sure they have every opportunity to do well. We will meet students where they are and help figure out what they need and where to go from there.”
