Miami Regionals, Butler Tech partner for new 1+3 Nursing model
Innovative program allows students to earn a BSN in 3 years after graduating high school
Miami Regionals, Butler Tech partner for new 1+3 Nursing model
The Butler Tech/Miami University Early Access BSN 1+3 Model will allow Butler Tech students to participate in an early access program where they complete their first year of the BSN while still in high school.
After graduating from Butler Tech with direct admission to Miami’s BSN program in Hamilton, participants will be on an accelerated path to earning a BSN within three years of completing high school.
“This program is a game-changer for aspiring nurses, the healthcare landscape, and our community,” Miami University President Gregory Crawford said. “By reducing time to degree and costs, we’re opening new doors for students and ensuring a stronger, more prepared workforce for the future.”
Affordability and access are two keys to the program, said Ande Durojaiye, vice president of Miami Regionals and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Applied Science.
“There will be no stronger return on investment from any nursing pathway than this,” Durojaiye said. “We’re impacting affordability, improving access, and aligning it with one of the biggest workforce needs we have in the state and the country.”
The program is open to current Butler Tech Bioscience Center students. Stephanie Nicely, Miami’s chair of Nursing, estimated 20 students each academic year to start, with the goal of growing to 40.
Students can apply to be part of Miami’s Work+ Program to receive free tuition if hired by a qualifying employer.
“One of the significant features about our partnership is that we are able to build upon the clinical skills students have gained during their time at Butler Tech, better preparing students for the healthcare workforce,” Nicely said. “Hospitals are experiencing significant nursing shortages. As a program, we have been intentionally examining how we support the needs of our clinical partners and ensure we are graduating highly qualified nurses.”
Students at the Butler Tech Bioscience Center in West Chester, will complete an entire first year of college with College Credit Plus courses through Cincinnati State and Miami Regionals. First-year Nursing course work will be delivered by Miami Nursing faculty at Butler Tech.
“The collaboration between Butler Tech and Miami University for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) streamlines the pathway to address the growing demand in healthcare,” said Jon Graft, superintendent and CEO of Butler Tech. “We’re excited to continue integrating programs with Miami University. By working together, we are advancing beyond traditional education models to drive transformative change in the field.”
Having built-in breaks during the summer and winter helps set the 1+3 model apart from other three-year programs, Nicely said, giving students the opportunity to expand their skills by earning a Microcredential or participating in internships, undergraduate research, or study abroad experiences.
“Other accelerated programs offer nursing courses year-round, eliminating the natural breaks between semesters,” Nicely said. “We wanted to create a program where those breaks are built in but also provide opportunities for students who want to engage in experiential learning activities.”
Students also have the option of a direct admission pathway to Miami’s online Master of Science in Nursing program, which can be completed within 21 months after earning a BSN. This puts students in a position for continued growth, Durojaiye said.
“It’s a great opportunity for our region,” Durojaiye said. “Butler Tech has been an exceptional partner with Miami Regionals. We have been able to come together to collaborate and think about innovative and new ways to attack a problem. This is just one example of the great things that are coming.”
