Miami Inn residence hall, Thomson Hall, to be removed during winter break
The Miami Inn will be removed over winter break. The building, on the northeast part of campus north of the Psychology building, was converted from an inn to a residence hall more than 10 years ago. The site will be returned to grass, according to Robert Bell, university architect and director of Planning, Architecture, and Engineering.
Thomson Hall, a residence hall on Miami’s Western campus built in 1963, will also be removed during winter break.
The site will be prepared for a ground mount solar photovoltaic (PV) installation, one of two ground mount solar arrays to be installed early this summer as part of the Sharon and Graham MItchell Sustainability Park. The Thomson site — or South Solar Field — and the North Solar Field located north of the Western Geothermal Plant, are expected to produce 2,260 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity annually.
The demolition contractors determine what materials can be recycled from the buildings, Bell said. Steel is typically recycled and the concrete and masonry rubble often gets crushed and reused.
