Miami welcomes first assistant vice president for online learning and professional education

Blake Faulkner
Blake Faulkner is Miami University's first assistant vice president for online learning and professional education.
Growing up, Blake Faulkner saw the importance of educators, teachers, and coaches. They impacted his life and pointed him toward a career in education that’s taken him from faculty member to provost to founder and president of InnovateH.Ed Associates.

Now, those influences are bringing Faulkner to Miami University as the school’s first assistant vice president for online learning and professional education. Faulkner begins the new role on March 1, and he’s eager to learn, listen, and lead Miami Online, the university’s recently unified online team.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to meet with people across the university and to work collaboratively with all of them as we move forward,” Faulkner said. “The MiamiTHRIVE strategic plan really reinforced to me that Miami is a future focused university that is proactively positioning itself to serve the changing needs and interests of students now and in the future. I’m also looking forward to working closely with the university's many business and industry, government and community partners. ”

Faulkner previously served as interim vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty at Wilmington College, as well as provost and chief academic officer for Herzing University. He also held positions at Pinnacle Career Institute, National American University, Western New Mexico University, Cameron University, and Peru State College.

As founder and president of InnovateH.Ed. Associates, a consulting firm for public and private higher education institutions, Faulkner serves as lead consultant and strategist whose work includes building and scaling quality in-person, online, and hybrid education programs. Faulkner has been involved in leading online education initiatives in higher education since 1998.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome Blake to Miami University,” said Elizabeth Mullenix, Miami’s provost. “Blake’s career as a leader in higher education makes him well suited to guide our online learning programs and help serve students at all stages of education and in life.”

Faulkner earned his bachelor’s degree in Education at Fort Lewis College before obtaining a Master of Science from Pittsburgh State University and a Doctor of Business Administration from Argosy University.

During his time as provost at Herzing University, Faulkner oversaw academic matters across 11 campus locations in eight states and the institution’s online campus.

“Blake brings a wealth of knowledge to Miami,” said Ande Durojaiye, vice president of Miami Regionals and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Applied Science. “His experience developing and growing online education will serve him well as we position Miami for continued success. We are extremely excited for him to join the team.”

As he begins his new role, Faulkner plans to listen and learn from the online team and others across the university to better understand the opportunities ahead.

“Miami has always been known as a university that provides great value to its students and graduates,” Faulkner said. “Everything is centered around students and ensuring they have the skills they need to successfully begin their careers, as well as the enduring skills they need to succeed throughout their lifetime.

“Miami Online will be a supporting partner in advancing the MiamiTHRIVE strategic plan. As the world we live and work in changes at an accelerated pace, learners are going to need education in different chunks and through different modalities as they move through life. Continually upskilling and reskilling is going to be of paramount importance for both individuals and the organizations they work for. The ability to be a part of something that continues to add value to people’s lives is what excites me the most about this opportunity.”
Established in 1809, Miami University is located in Oxford, Ohio, with regional campuses in Hamilton and Middletown, a learning center in West Chester, and a European study center in Luxembourg. Interested in learning more about Miami Online? Visit the website for more information.
