Miami students win regional SPJ Mark of Excellence awards
Miami University students won seven first-place awards and six finalists awards in the annual Mark of Excellence competition regional awards sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.
“We are proud of the continued success of our students,” said Joe Sampson, Miami University journalism coordinator. “These latest awards from the SPJ Mark of Excellence competition confirm what our faculty has long known: Our students consistently produce high-quality, important, and impactful work on behalf of the communities they serve.”
The students won in the Region 4 competition, which includes other universities in Ohio, Michigan, and West Virginia and parts of Pennsylvania. The awards were presented during the Regional Conference in Cleveland this weekend.
Picking up first-place honors were:
- Staff of The Miami Student, who won the Corbin Gwaltney Award for Best All-Around Student Newspaper
- Sarah Frosch and Anna Reier of The Miami Student for Best Use of Multimedia
- Chloe McKinney and Natalie Luci won for Narrative Podcast, which they did for a journalism class last fall taught by Sampson. It was later published in The Miami Student
- Taylor Powers, Sarah Kennel and Sarah Frosch of the Miami Student for Conversational Podcast
- Austin Smith of The Miami Student for Science/Environment/Climate Reporting
- Sarah Frosch for Feature Photography for the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl
- Kethan Babu for Sports Writing
Finalists were:
- Staff of The Miami Student for Best Affiliated Website for www.miamistudent.net
- Sam Norton of The Miami Student for Science/Environment/Climate Reporting columns
- Venezia McHenry of The Miami Student for Personality Profile
- Chloe McKinney of The Miami Student for Personality Profile
- Parker Green for Editorial/Opinion Writing for columns
- Stella Powers for Cultural Criticism for reviews
The winners will now compete for the national Mark of Excellence Awards that will be presented at the MediaFest, the National College Media Convention, in October in Washington, D.C.
Miami won three national awards in 2024 and two national finalist awards.
