Judy Alston, Érica Fernández to serve as co-editors of prestigious publication in educational leadership

Miami is new home for EAQ journal
Érica Fernández, too, has seen firsthand the profound impact of EAQ through her work as a member of the executive committee of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA), which publishes the journal. She and incoming associate editor Bryan Duarte have a recent online article for EAQ.
So, when an opportunity arose to make Miami University the new home for EAQ, Alston and Fernández did not hesitate. Thanks to their efforts, the university will host the quarterly publication beginning fall 2025.
Alston and Fernández will serve as co-executive editors of EAQ for five years.
“It’s exciting, not only for us to shepherd the journal and bring to life the vision that we have, but also is a great opportunity to spotlight Miami University and our Department of Educational Leadership,” Fernández said.
Fernández is a professor of Educational Leadership and Alston is the department chair and professor. Both pointed to the benefits housing the journal will have for Miami’s graduate students, who will get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to regularly produce a publication the magnitude of EAQ.
“The journal is an absolute jewel in the crown for this university,” Alston said.
“It is a good time for our department to have a major impact in the field of educational leadership. It’s an opportunity that only comes once in a lifetime.”
First published in 1965, EAQ was last hosted by Michigan State University. Other previous host institutions include New York University, the University of Rochester, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Utah, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Connecticut.
Alston and Fernández’s proposal for EAQ included five domains: equity and justice; accountability; democratization; internationalization; and broadening the margins of what constitutes as leaders and leadership acts.
Being the first women of color to serve in the capacity of EAQ co-editors is symbolic of where the field of educational leadership is headed, Fernández said.
“That carries a lot of weight and responsibility,” Fernández said. “That is one of the powerful symbols of us being named as co-editors. It is showing the movement in the field of educational leadership.”
The pair has assembled an editorial team that features Melanie Bertrand (University of Arizona), Bryan J. Duarte (Purdue University), Peter G. Ghazarian (State University of New York at Oswego), Kevin Lawrence Henry, Jr. (University of Wisconsin- Madison), Joel Malin (Miami University), Guy Parmigian (Miami University), Haiyan Qian (Chinese University of Hong Kong), and Katherine C. Rodela (Washington State University-Vancouver).
When the call came for proposals for the journal’s latest location, Alston and Fernández were eager to collaborate. Though she is part of UCEA’s executive committee, Fernández was not involved in the selection process.
“We hope that, collectively, as a team, we continue to live out and hold ourselves accountable to our domains,” Fernández said. “As we’re steering the ship, we hope we don’t get lost, and we stay on course to what we proposed. We recognize it’s going to be a challenge, but I think we’re up for it.”
Added Alston: “This what leadership is about. We can research it. We can profess it. But we also have to do it. We are leading this charge. We have had so much support from the university and from our colleagues. The university has been so supportive throughout this whole endeavor.”
