Six Miamians receive Fulbright grants

Six Miamians have received Fulbright grant offers, and two were named alternates. In addition, Audrey Bird, a rising junior with a double major in Economics and Public Health, has been selected for the Fulbright UK Summer Institutes.

Cristina Alcalde, professor of Global and Intercultural Studies, was named to the India International Education Administrators Program as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar. She participated in that program in March.

Fulbright grants

Earlier this spring, 14 Miamians were named Fulbright semifinalists. It was recently announced that six have received grant offers. They include:

  • Melinda Barman — English Teaching Assistant Award, Germany
  • Charles Ellis – English Teaching Assistant Award, Spain
  • Cyle Ginsberg – English Teaching Assistant Award, Morocco
  • Sofia Rebull – Open Study/Research Award, Peru
  • Rachelle Swan ’24 — Open Study/Research Award, Ghana
  • Andrew Whitson – English Teaching Assistant Award, Taiwan

Named as alternates were Meredith Perkins, Fulbright/University of East Anglia Award, United Kingdom; and Pietro Lanza di Scalea, Fulbright-Luiss Award for MA Program in Business.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes

Bird is part of this year’s Fulbright UK Summer Institutes cohort.

Karla Guinigundo, director of Global Partnerships at Miami, said Bird is the second student selected in the past three years. The other was Meredith Perkins in 2023.

“Only 60 first- and second-year students from the U.S. are invited to the Fulbright UK Summer Institutes each year,” Guinigundo said. “Having two Miami students selected in the past three years is a testament to the strength of our applicants.”

Bird — who will study at Scotland’s oldest university through the Fulbright University of St. Andrews Summer Institute — said in her Institutes bio that she is “passionate about human behavior and dedicated to advancing social mobility by addressing systematic barriers to economic advancement.”

At Miami, Bird is involved in Women Who Invest, Butler County Stream Teams (a local environmental conservation group), and Club Broomball. She has also served as a teaching assistant in the Department of Computer Science as well as the Center for Student Success and looks forward to assisting as a peer career coach in the fall.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes are three- to four-week programs for U.S. undergraduate students who have no or very little travel experience outside North America. Participants are encouraged to explore the culture, heritage and history of the United Kingdom (UK) while experiencing higher education there.

Established in 1809, Miami University is located in Oxford, Ohio, with regional campuses in Hamilton and Middletown, a learning center in West Chester, and a European study center in Luxembourg. Interested in learning more about Global Initiatives at Miami? Visit the website for more information.
